What is AEO?

AEO — answer engine optimization — is the practice of making sure that when an AI engine answers a question about your business, the answer is correct. Not that you were mentioned. That the answer was right.

The shift AEO responds to

For twenty years, search returned a list of links and the customer decided which to trust. The job of SEO was to be on that list, high up. The customer still visited your site, where your own words were the final authority on your hours, your prices and what you actually do.

AI engines removed that step. Asked whether you take a particular insurance, ChatGPT answers yes or no. Asked when you close on Saturday, Gemini gives a time. The customer acts on that answer and never arrives at your site to have it corrected. If the answer is wrong, you do not get a lower ranking — you get a lost customer and no signal that it happened.

AEO is the discipline that grew out of that change. Its unit of work is not a ranking. It is a claim: a single checkable statement an engine made about you.

What AEO actually involves

In practice, AEO is four repeating steps.

Establish what is true. You cannot grade an answer without a verified record of the facts — your services, your hours, your insurances, your licences, what you explicitly do not offer. Most businesses have never written this down in one place, which is why most wrong answers go unnoticed.

Ask the questions your customers ask. Not queries about your brand. The questions a prospective customer types before they have heard of you, and the qualifying questions they ask once they have.

Grade the answers claim by claim. Decompose each answer into atomic statements and check each one against the record. "Mentioned us" is not a measurement. "Said we do not accept Medicaid, which is false, on three of four engines" is.

Publish corrections where engines read. Structured data, plain-language pages, and the third-party listings that engines quote more often than your own site.

Why 'visibility' is only half the job

Most tools sold as AEO measure share of voice: how often you were mentioned relative to competitors. That is worth knowing, and it is not the expensive problem.

A business that is mentioned in every answer and described incorrectly in half of them is in worse shape than one that is mentioned less and described accurately. Mention frequency without accuracy measurement tells you the engine is talking about you. It does not tell you whether what it is saying is costing you customers.

How to know whether it worked

This is where most AEO work quietly falls apart. Engines change on their own. A model update can move your numbers several points in a week with no action from you, in either direction.

So a before-and-after is not evidence. To claim a fix worked you need a set of control questions you never touch, measured over the same window. If the controls moved too, the engine changed and your fix is unproven. If the controls held and your treated questions moved, you have something. Report it with an interval, not a single number, and say plainly when the sample is too small to tell.

Common questions

What does AEO stand for?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization: making sure AI engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity answer questions about your business correctly.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

They describe overlapping work. GEO (generative engine optimization) is used more in academic writing; AEO is the term most practitioners and buyers use. The substance is the same: influencing what generative engines say about you.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. Traditional search still drives most discovery for most businesses, and the same underlying facts feed both. AEO adds a second job: being described accurately in answers, not just ranked in links.

How do you measure AEO?

Ask a fixed set of customer questions to each engine repeatedly, break the answers into individual claims, and check each claim against a verified record of the facts. The core metric is the share of checkable statements that are correct, reported with a confidence interval.

Answerclaim asks the questions your customers ask, checks every claim against your verified record, and shows you which answers are wrong — with the margin of error, and with a control group so you can tell your fixes from the engine changing.
