AEO vs SEO
They share most of their inputs and almost none of their feedback loops. That difference is what trips teams up.
The same facts, a different outcome
SEO optimises for a position in a list of links. The measurable outcome is rank, and the customer still arrives at your site, where you control the final word.
AEO optimises for the correctness of a synthesised answer. There is no rank. There is a statement, and it is either right or wrong. The customer may never reach your site at all.
Where the work overlaps
Structured data, a crawlable site, accurate listings, and clear plain-language content help both. If your SEO fundamentals are sound, a good deal of AEO is already done — you simply have no measurement of it.
Crawler access is the sharpest overlap, and the one most often missed. A robots.txt that blocks GPTBot or ClaudeBot does not affect your Google ranking at all, so it survives SEO audits indefinitely while quietly guaranteeing that those engines answer from third-party sources rather than from you.
Where the work diverges
Negative facts matter in AEO and are invisible in SEO. Nobody writes a page about the insurances they do not take. But an engine asked "do they take X?" will answer either way, and absent an explicit statement it guesses. Publishing what you do not offer is an AEO-specific move with no SEO equivalent.
The feedback loop is slower and noisier. Rank changes are observable within days and attributable. Engine answers vary between identical runs, so a single observation tells you almost nothing — you need repetition, and you need controls to separate your work from model drift.
There is no ranking to chase, so priorities invert. In SEO you invest where volume is. In AEO you invest where being wrong is most expensive, which is usually a low-volume qualifying question like insurance, licensing, or hours.
What to do about it
Keep your SEO programme. Add a claim-level measurement of what engines say, a record of what is actually true to grade against, and a control set so you can tell your own effect from the engine's drift. That is the whole of the additional work.
Common questions
Should I stop doing SEO and do AEO instead?
No. Traditional search still drives the majority of discovery for most businesses, and the underlying work overlaps substantially. AEO is an addition, not a replacement.
Do AI engines use the same ranking signals as Google?
Partly. They read your site, and they lean heavily on third-party sources such as business directories and review sites. That is why a correct website and a stale directory listing can still produce a wrong answer.
Does blocking AI crawlers hurt my SEO?
Blocking GPTBot or ClaudeBot does not affect Google rankings, which is exactly why it often goes unnoticed. It does mean those engines cannot read anything you publish, so they answer from other sources instead.
See what engines say about your business
Answerclaim asks the questions your customers ask, checks every claim against your verified record, and shows you which answers are wrong — with the margin of error, and with a control group so you can tell your fixes from the engine changing.
